Flooding chaos across West Country

Flooding chaos across West Country

People across the West Country were reaching for their home insurance policies over the weekend after storms and flash floods caused chaos and power cuts.

Forty firefighters fought a blaze at a Norden Farm campsite near Corfe Castle in Dorset after lightening struck an electricity pole. Caravans, trees and buildings were damaged.

A house in Tiverton was also struck by lightning, and a number of cars were trapped in floodwater in Exeter. Avon Fire Service were called to eight flooding incidents, mainly around Bath.

Devon was the worst hit, with 2,000 properties left without electricity. A Western Power Distribution spokesman says that power has now been restored.

Tony Conlan, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "There is no immediate sign of a return to the warm weather of a week ago."

"From Monday to Wednesday, temperatures are unlikely to rise above 14-17C (57-63F) in the south, and a little cooler in the north, though they may rise slightly by Thursday and Friday."
