Van maintenance
Whether they’re used for light–lugging or heavier–hauling, vans need to be looked after to ensure their reliability and performance.
- Fluid levels...
Check and top up fluid levels such as engine coolant, oil and brake fluid. Too much or too little engine oil level could damage an engine.
- Keep it clean...
Wash and clean the vehicle, particularly in winter, to ensure the windows, lights and door mirrors are clean.
- Let there be light...
Check that all lights operate correctly.
- Looking ahead...
Ensure wiper blades work and the windscreen washer fluid bottle is full.
- Is the exhaust, exhausted?
Listen out for any irregular noises and look out for emissions. If anything is out of the ordinary it might be wise to seek professional advice.
Directgov offers the following maintenace tips which can apply to van owners:
Tyres:
Check the tyre pressures weekly and before travelling long distances. Recommended pressures can usually be found in the vehicle documentation, which should state both loaded and unloaded pressures.
Read the owner’s manual:
The manual may also cover extra maintenance activities recommended for the vehicle. Manufacturers’ routine service intervals vary according to each make and vehicle type.
MOT the vehicle:
Putting the van through the annual MOT or goods vehicle test can help ensure it complies with key roadworthiness and environmental requirements.
