Green Energy

With gas & electricity prices seemingly always on the rise, many people are switching energy suppliers to make certain they find the best deal available.

Another concern is that as our energy needs increase, we may be causing environmental damage. As more and more people feel the need to reduce the negative effect they have on nature, the energy suppliers have begun to offer ‘green’ tariffs to help reduce environmental damage.

You can buy green energy from renewable sources for your home to reduce the environmental impact of your energy consumption. The green energy we can offer through our suppliers covers the entire range of renewable sources – from wind farms to hydro–electric power.

To help you tell all the different green tariffs apart and find the greenest deal that suits your budget, we have launched our own unique method of rating green tariffs. Our system takes into account the following features to help you sort through the different shades of green.

  • Additionality: Suppliers must by law provide a minimum percentage of the electricity they sell from renewable sources. The minimum renewable content for 2008 through to 2009 is 9.1%. Suppliers who better the minimum percentage score higher in our rating system, because their tariffs provide additional electricity from renewable sources. Suppliers who provide 100% green electricity score highest.
  • Renewable Content: Tariffs whose renewable content is 100% score higher than those tariffs where the electricity you consume is not completely covered by renewable energy sources. For example, if you use 3,000 kiloWatt hours of electricity per year, and your supplier pledges to feed 3,000 kiloWatt hours from renewable sources into the national grid to offset your annual usage, then that tariff scores higher than one where less of your electricity usage is covered by renewable sources.
  • Price: All things being equal we apply a price ranking to determine the best option for you. If two tariffs are equally green, then the cheaper tariff will be listed first.

To see our green rating in action, simply click on the "Green" button from the results page, and review your choices. Then click on the tariff name for information about individual or additional benefits.

Please note that our rating applies to electricity only. There are currently no gas tariffs with distinct renewable green benefits in the market.
