Choosing Pet Insurance

Here are some of the features and benefits to look out for when selecting cover for your beloved family pet.

  1. Exclusions: bear in mind if your pet has had an illness or health problems before, they might not be covered on any new plan – a significant fact to remember when purchasing. Policies do vary on when new claims can be made and sometimes a new claim cannot be registered until your pet has been covered for 10, 14 or 30 days on the insurance.
  2. Third Party liability cover: if your pet is on the mischievous side or accidentally causes damage to a third party; having this cover for this could save you serious outlay. This is potentially more of issue for larger dogs but you’ll decide what insurance you need.
  3. When happens when your pet gets older: it is always important to read the terms and conditions attached to your specific policy. In terms of certain illness or accidental death coverage, the amount of financial compensation on the death or illness of a pet can decrease when they reach advanced years (in cat and dog terms).
  4. Do I want to pay my premium monthly or annually: Many companies offer you the option to make a monthly or annual payment for your premium. A monthly direct debit is normally convenient and lets you manage the payments over the course of a year. Or, you can opt to pay for a years cover if you prefer. With Pet Insurance, you are unlikely to be charged extra for making monthly payments, as you sometimes are with car insurance.
  5. Where can I find out more about a provider? Naturally, you’ll want to ensure your pet is in good hands, should an accident happen or you need to make a claim. Useful information will be contained in the policy summary document, which will tell you how to find details on how to contact the business, and what to do if you needed to make a complaint in the future.
  6. How would I make a claim? Most companies will allow you to notify them of the claim over the telephone, but they may require you to fill out a form for more serious claims. If a claim involves a third party, the insurer may contact them directly. With smaller amounts you may have to pay upfront and then make the claim for the costs afterwards.
