Reading the small print

• Borrowers may want to think about looking at the terms and conditions of their chosen mortgage - for example interest rate (such as fixed or variable), when the deal ends and what happens after that.

How much can be borrowed?

Lenders have their own method of working out how much can be given to a borrower - but generally may base it on:

• Affordability
• The total income of the household
• Any money owed, such as loans and outstanding credit card balances
• Household bills and living expenses

Other pointers

• Think about budgeting for other costs such as a survey, legal fees, Stamp Duty, land registry fees, removals/moving in costs
• An indication of how much could be borrowed can be provided by the mortgage calculators
• Tesco Compare can provide a search facility for home insurance to give borrowers an indication of this cost
• Overall, borrowers could consider shopping around to compare mortgage rates and deals using a comparison site
