Life insurance tips
Check what is included in your policy
Always read your pre-sale and post-sale policy documents carefully so you know exactly what your cover includes. Does your life insurance plan include terminal illness cover? What conditions does your critical illness cover specify? A pay out will only be valid for those illnesses listed in your plan.
Buy sufficient cover
Think carefully and realistically about the amount of cover you need. Take into consideration all your financial requirements including any debts, mortgages and children’s school fees. Our online calculator can help give you an idea of the level of cover needed. Also, be aware that cover for different financial needs will usually be required for different terms.
Shop around
It is worth doing your research and comparing different policies on a like-for-like basis. Even if you already have a life insurance plan in place it’s worth checking every few years to see if there’s a better deal on offer.
Consider your options: Single or joint policies?
It is worth checking out both single and joint life insurance options. Most joint policies work on a first-death basis – meaning the remaining policy holder would not be covered. By taking out two single policies you could be doubling your cover for not a great deal extra.
Be truthful
Answer all questions honestly throughout the application process. If you omit any relevant information or provide inaccurate data – your policy could be deemed invalid in the event of making a claim.
Please note that neither Tesco Compare nor The Idol offers advice, so please ensure that any policy you apply for meets your needs. If you require advice we recommend that you contact an independent financial adviser.
