Cookie Policy

By accessing the Tesco Compare website you confirm to have understood and agreed to this policy and our Terms and Conditions.

What is a cookie?

Cookies are text files containing small amounts of information which are downloaded to your personal computer, mobile or other device when you visit a website. Cookies are then sent back to the originating website on each subsequent visit, or to another website that recognises that cookie. Cookies are useful because they allow a website to recognise a user’s device.

Persistent cookies – these cookies remain on a user’s device for the period of time specified in the cookie. They are activated each time that the user visits the website that created that particular cookie.

Session cookies – these cookies allow website operators to link the actions of a user during a browser session. A browser session starts when a user opens the browser window and finishes when they close the browser window. Session cookies are created temporarily. Once you close the browser, all session cookies are deleted.

Cookies do lots of different jobs, like letting you navigate between pages efficiently, remembering your preferences, and generally improve the user experience. They can also help to ensure that adverts you see online are more relevant to you and your interests.

You can find more information about cookies at www.allaboutcookies.org and www.youronlinechoices.eu.

Cookies used on the Tesco Compare website

A list of all the cookies used on the Tesco Compare website by category is set out below.

Strictly necessary cookies

These cookies enable services you have specifically asked for. For those types of cookies that are strictly necessary, no consent is required.

These cookies are essential in order to enable you to move around the Tesco Compare website and use its features, such as accessing secure areas of the website. Without these cookies services you have asked for, like shopping baskets or e–billing, cannot be provided.

Performance cookies

These cookies collect anonymous information on the pages visited. By using the Tesco Compare website, you agree that we can place these types of cookies on your device. These cookies collect information about how visitors use the Tesco Compare website, for instance which pages visitors go to most often, and if they get error messages from web pages. These cookies don’t collect information that identifies a visitor. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. It is only used to improve how the Tesco Compare website works.

Functionality cookies

These cookies remember choices you make to improve your experience. By using the Tesco Compare website, you agree that we can place these types of cookies on your device. These cookies allow the Tesco Compare website to remember choices you make (such as your user name, language or the region you are in) and provide enhanced, more personal features. These cookies can also be used to remember changes you have made to text size, fonts and other parts of web pages that you can customise. They may also be used to provide services you have asked for such as watching a video or commenting on a blog. The information these cookies collect may be anonymised and they cannot track your browsing activity on other websites.

Targeting or advertising cookies

These cookies collect information about your browsing habits in order to make advertising relevant to you and your interests.

These cookies are used to deliver adverts more relevant to you and your interests. They are also used to limit the number of times you see an advertisement as well as help measure the effectiveness of the advertising campaign. They are usually placed by advertising networks with our permission. They remember that you have visited a website and this information is shared with other organisations such as advertisers. Quite often targeting or advertising cookies will be linked to site functionality provided by the other organisation.

We use Remarketing with Google Analytics to advertise online. Third–party vendors, including Google, may show our advertisements on sites across the Internet. We and other advertisers, including Google, use first–party cookies (such as the Google Analytics cookie) and third–party cookies together to inform, optimise, and serve advertisements based on your past visits to this website.

Behavioural advertising and online privacy

A guide to behavioural advertising and online privacy has been produced by the internet advertising industry which can be found at www.youronlinechoices.eu. The guide contains an explanation of the IAB’s self–regulatory scheme to allow you greater control of the advertising you see.

Using browser settings to manage cookies

The Help menu on the menu bar of most browsers will tell you how to prevent your browser from accepting new cookies, how to have the browser notify you when you receive a new cookie and how to disable cookies altogether. You can also disable or delete similar data used by browser add–ons, such as Flash cookies, by changing the add–on’s settings or visiting the website of its manufacturer.

Legal & Privacy

Your security and privacy

We are very aware that security is a key issue for people who use the Internet. Security is also important to us. Below you’ll find information on how you can use Tesco Compare safely and securely:

Security features on our site

We use a standard based secure encryption mechanism . This is the Internet standard for the secure transmission of data. When you register or login to get a quote, the browser window will become secure to protect your information. You know this window is secure because your browser will show a padlock or key at the bottom right hand side of your screen.

After a period of inactivity (by this we mean you choose not to select any of the buttons or links on the page) you will automatically be logged out for your security.

Phishing/Email Scams

The customers of large businesses are sometimes targeted by fraudsters. They are sent bogus emails requesting that they provide their personal security details in order to reactivate their account, verify an email address, or some other reason. Phishers attack trusted business’s names to make users believe they are genuine, and then fraudulently use your name and the stolen information.

We would recommend that you be on your guard against emails asking for information like this. Tesco Compare will never ask you to reveal your security details via email, and you should never reveal your username or password to anyone.

Logging out

Remember to log out when you have finished using our website. This will ensure you are properly and securely logged out. If you are using a PC which could be used by someone else, (e.g. in an Internet Cafe) we also recommend you also close your Internet browser.

Information submitted by you

In order to obtain quotes for any product or service, you will need to answer a number of questions which cover those needed by the different insurers/providers. It is important that you answer all questions truthfully and disclose all relevant facts. If you do not provide the information requested, or fail to tell the insurer/provider about any circumstance likely to influence their assessment of your application, or any change in the facts supplied or your circumstances before your policy goes on risk, it could invalidate your insurance or product. You must take all reasonable precautions to ensure that any data you submit is true and accurate.

Delivery of your quote

You should receive your quotation interactively (usually within 2 minutes of your completed request). However, for some services we are reliant on the availability of the third party sites and on the overall performance of the internet. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that you will receive your quotation within this timescale, but we aim to let you know if we are unable to complete your quote in these time–frames.

Quote guarantees

When you receive an insurance quote the price quoted to you will be accurate at that time, based on the details you provided. Each insurance provider guarantees its quotes for a fixed period of time. These time periods may vary.
