Many of these are well known such as driving more conservatively to reduce fuel consumption, and having your car regularly serviced to reduce breakdown risks etc. If you have a modest level of DIY skills and appropriate tools, doing some routine jobs on the car yourself could prove cheaper than paying a mechanic – though as a normal rule it pays not to be over-ambitious in that area!

It’s worth noting that insurance companies may be able to offer lower prices if you change some aspects of the policy you’re purchasing. For example, if you accept a higher excess (the amount of contribution you make to any claim) then the lower the insurance cost may be. Remember though, this has to be paid out of your own pocket, so don’t agree to an excess that you wouldn’t be able to afford.

You’ll also probably find that if you exclude certain categories of risk from the policy cover the costs will similarly fall. So, purchasing a policy that covers only named drivers will usually be cheaper than one that covers ‘any driver’. You may find that a policy that excludes younger drivers will be cheaper again than one that covers say two or three named drivers of 18-19 years of age.
