The right deal for you

Tesco Compare knows a thing or two when it comes to finding the best car insurance deals. Here are some top tips to keep you safe and save a bit of money.

1. Shop around

The right car insurance deal for you is out there, you just have to look for it (well, we do). You may be able to save money when renewing your car insurance policy, but you need to get several quotes to help you find the right deal. We help you compare on a like-for-like basis so you can really understand the cover that's being offered. That's why Tesco Compare could save you lots of time, because we do all the legwork for you.

2. Consider your excess

You may wish to pay more towards the cost of any accident repairs. A higher excess may bring down your premiums, but it also means you will have to pay more in the event of a claim. Our comparison page helps you understand the total excesses - there may be compulsory excesses, as well as voluntary amounts that you can opt to increase or reduce.

3. Only put regular drivers on the policy

Make sure that only regular drivers are named on the car insurance policy. You can always add someone to your car insurance policy for a few days when they really need to drive the car. If you have inexperienced or young drivers on your car insurance policy, the premium may be calculated on the youngest driver.

4. Protect your no-claims bonus

This may increase the premium, but it might save you money when compared to losing all or part of your no-claims discount.

5. Fit an approved immobiliser

Fitting an approved car alarm, immobiliser or tracking device could save you around 5% with many insurance providers on your car insurance premium.

6. Stay off the roads!

If you drive less, you could save more. But be honest about your mileage, otherwise any claim might not be paid.

7. Choose your car carefully

Expensive cars, sports cars or specialist cars attract higher premiums. Sometimes, a slightly different model or smaller engine may make for cheaper car insurance. Pick a low grouped vehicle – they’re shown on the ABI Group Rating website.

8. Keep your car locked in a garage overnight

Your car is more at risk of theft on the street or in your driveway, so if it’s left there the premium may be higher.

9. Don't inflate the value of your car

Inflating the value of your car when you get a car insurance quote will increase your premium. And if your car is written off, you will only ever be paid its market value.

10. Drive carefully

A continuous period of accident-free driving will increase your no-claims discount. Plus, insurance providers take driving convictions very seriously. Convicted drivers car insurance premiums may be much higher.

11. Take the advanced driving test

Passing the advanced driving test offered by the Institute of Advanced Motorists will demonstrate you are committed to safe motoring and could lead to reductions in your car insurance premiums. Visit the Institute of Advanced Motorists website to learn more.
